How to Style Your Home for Halloween

20 September 2022 –

Here’s how we’re celebrating the spooky season through elevated design.

It’s almost time for Halloween and while we love to celebrate this time of year, it can be hard to find styling inspiration that feels celebratory of the season yet subtle enough to blend into our homes without overpowering them. Halloween decorations are, naturally, a little over-the-top. Throughout the years, we’ve experimented with a few different Halloween looks, and we thought it was time to share a few tips for decorating for the spookiest time of the year. Here are a few tips and tricks for introducing Halloween decorations into your home in a Studio McGee-way.

01

Create Impactful Moments
Small but mighty.

When it comes to holiday and seasonal decor, we’ve found that it’s much easier to make a statement when you focus on one or two areas of the home to create impactful moments rather than scattering small items all around your space. Whether you want to focus on a room or a particular moment, like an entryway table or built-in shelving, emphasizing specific areas can feel less visually overwhelming.

02

Incorporate Textural Elements
The touch of the season.

Mixing and matching textural elements can make any vignette feel surprisingly spooky, and it’s a simple way to re-imagine pieces you already have. Vintage textured accents, raw woods, brass, and even smokey glass can all create a dimensional Halloween dynamic.

03

Focus on Color Palette
Halloween hues.

While you don’t need to incorporate bright colors to make your space feel Halloween-ready, sticking to a palette is still helpful in creating a cohesive look. Whether you like more traditional Halloween colors of orange and black or want to go for a minimal, muted look, start with a jumping-off point like artwork or even the finishes in your home, and build your decor around it. White makes a surprisingly spooky pop of color in a Halloween tablescape.

04

Layer in Lighting
Candles provide the ambiance.

There’s something about taper candles that just feel like Halloween, and we love the traditional haunted-house-like vibe they add to a mantel, entry table, or even dining table, Plus, when lit, they create a cozy ambiance, perfect for settling in and watching all of your favorite seasonal movies.

05

Bring Interest with Florals
The shades of the season.

Pulling in an element of texture or color with your greenery can be a great unexpected way to add a spooky element to your space. Dried florals, sculptural bare branches, or even corn husks can complete a Halloween look perfectly.
