What’s Hot in Kitchen Trends Right Now
06 March –
Kitchen trends come and go, and there’s some that will always be in style. We’re looking ahead and shining a light on a few that we’re loving right now.
Whether you’re designing a house from the ground up or just want some inspiration to redo small bits of your existing kitchen, we think looking at what’s trending for 2025 will help get you inspired for the design decisions that lie ahead. With kitchen design trends, and interior design trends as a whole, it’s important to keep in mind that they are, in fact, trendy. We suggest not going too hard into trends anywhere in your home, especially the kitchen. You want it to have longevity and given that it’s one of the most expensive parts of the home, you want to love it long past the construction phase. But there are ways to implement some kitchen design trends into your overall design without going too far. With that said, if you love a loud, statement tile then do a loud, statement tile. No one knows your aesthetic better than you. Here are a few kitchen design trends that we love and we hope inspire.

01
Pot Rails as Backsplashes
We’re loving seeing and using pot rails as a backsplash feature. Spanning nearly the length of the range, this kitchen trend provides the opportunity to bring in some character through styling. In our Water’s Edge project, Shea and the design team had a custom pot rail made at 72″ in length. In an oversized kitchen, it’s important to introduce elements of warmth. This unlacquered brass rail that will patina over time, with a collection of vintage pieces, was just the ticket.

02
Unique Countertop Edge Profiles
When designing a custom kitchen, one way to make it stand out is by speaking with your design or contractor about countertop edge profiles, a kitchen trend that’s elevated and timeless. While there are many different styles to choose from—bevel, quarter round, and waterfall—one of our favorites is the bullnose. This is the word used to describe the half-rounded, finished edge that’s buffed to shape. You can see this come to life in our Houston Estate project below.

03
Islands That Are Furniture Pieces
One kitchen design trend we’re loving is replacing the built-in kitchen island with a standalone piece of furniture. In an upcoming project, Shea and the design team are putting this kitchen trend to action with an oversized, vintage-inspired table that functions just as an island would. Check out renderings for the project below and keep your eyes on SM.com to see this project reveal in 2025.
While this is a good place to integrate some character into your overall design, you can also get the look a bit more refined. McGee & Co.’s Kitchen Island gets the feel of a vintage piece while having modern functionality. Oversized at 118” long, the island is built of warm oak with elevated joinery that creates a statement in your kitchen design.

04
Built-In Plate Racks
A kitchen design trend you can file under “traditional and classic” is making a comeback and we’re here for it. We’ve been seeing plate racks built into cabinetry, like you’ll see in our Studio McGee Spec Home project below. Not only are they handy, but it’s a great way to display some of your prettiest dishware.

05
Sculleries and Butler Pantries
We realize that this kitchen design trend heavily depends on square footage, but if you have the space, consider a standalone scullery or butler’s pantry. In our Cabo Dos Vistas project, a space meant for large-scale entertaining, the clients opted for a smaller kitchen behind the main kitchen. This allowed them to keep the main kitchen design more refined and aesthetically driven, and then have the functionality needed for hosting tucked away. If your home’s kitchen footprint allows, consider sectioning off a certain amount of space allotted solely for a walk-in pantry.

06
Integrated Sink Drains
There are all sorts of ways to customize your kitchen sink. You can do it integrated into your countertop or add an apron-front design. One of our favorites is having drainage portals carved into the countertop around your sink. Nothing says luxury more than a design element that makes cooking and cleaning easier. Take a look at the custom kitchen of our Summit Estate project below.

07
Classic Blue and White Delft Tiles
It’s quite a niche kitchen design trend but it’s one we’re diving into headfirst. The timeless allure of blue and white delft tiles is back in a big way. We love how whimsical they can be, injecting vintage charm and loads of character into the space. Shea and the design team are using delft tiles in the butler’s pantry of an upcoming design project. Explore the renderings below.

08
Shaker Cabinets With Bead Details
In kitchen design trends, cabinet profiles come and go. It used to be more ornate and traditional, and for a while we were seeing more streamlined fronts. One cabinet profile we’re loving at the moment is a classic shaker style front with a bead trim detail that adds just the right amount of visual interest. You can see that kitchen design trend in real life on the cabinets of our Houston Estate project.
