Modern Lines

Soft Curves

04 February –

Explore how Shea and the design team mixed design styles inside this Texas family home.

Over the years, Studio McGee’s sweet spot has become the fine balance between modern and traditional. The Oaks Project stands as a stunning case study on melding straight, modern lines with soft, traditional curves.

Soft silhouettes are the perfect way to bring some delicacy to a room’s overall look and feel. In the case of The Oaks Project, the home’s architecture leans decidedly modern with walls of steel window systems and linear wood beam ceilings. While the shell of the home’s modern architecture is stunning in its pared down form, Shea and the design team wanted to introduce some textural warmth, depth of color, and an overall cozier feel for the young family of five that calls it home. Below, explore a few ways in which soft curves were utilized inside this project to take modern forms and create traditional vignettes.

The home’s dining room showcases a beautiful mix of lines and curves. The black grides of the steel window system are given warmth with a drapped linen bench and rounded-back chairs.

Set in front of a grid of black, steel windows, the home’s primary bathroom houses a deep soaking tub. The curvature of its frame is the perfect juxtaposition against the more modern backdrop.

The home’s living room is encased in steel windows, a decidedly modern architectural element. To soften the look and give the expansive space a sense of coziness, Shea and the design team kept the majority of the furnishing selections to ones with curved forms.
